el Butipiso

comprehensive renovation

Location: Malaga Area: 200 sqm Year: 2024

La Butiplaya is a small seaside neighbourhood in La Cala de Mijas, where this apartment occupies the second floor of a residential building just 150 metres from the beach.  The setting captures the calm rhythm of a coastal town, where the proximity to the sea quietly defines the way clients live.

Originally composed of two separate apartments, the house had become fragmented into a sequence of small rooms arranged along a corridor. After the children left, nearly half of the property went unused.

The proposal reorganises the house along the long axis, where common spaces are interconnected, allowing views to extend from end to end and towards the sea.

Entering the apartment, a transitional threshold leads directly into the living room, from which the rest of the spaces unfold.

The living room sits at the centre of the house opening generously to the outside through its picture window. It is an interior “courtyard” that gathers light, opens to the sea and connects the rest of the rooms.

The whole arrangement recalls the traditional circulation from zaguan to patio to rooms, characteristic of the casa-patio typology so present in Andalusian architecture, here reimagined within an apartment.

The kitchen, the room closest to the sea, celebrates the Mediterranean. Here, the family’s ceramic creations and collection of apothecary jars are on display.

On the opposite side of the house, the library looks out toward the hills, acting as a quiet counterpoint to the kitchen.

The master bedroom maintains a privileged position oriented towards the sunrise over the sea.

Bright sleeping area set against a lush green bathroom.
